New World Monkeys

Here is a list of the New World Monkeys:

Marmosets belong to the genus Callithrix. They are about 20 cm long. Marmosets germline chimerism makes them unique in their class. They possess more primitive traits such as claws instead of nails, tactile hairs on their wrists and primitive brain. They also lack wisdom teeth.

Tamarins are very small, nearly about the size of a squirrel. Belonging to the family of Cebidae, they are classified as the genus Saguinus. Tamarins are omnivores and prefer tropical rain forests and open forest areas. They are found mostly in southern Central America.

Squirrel Monkeys belong to the genus Saimiri. Inhabiting the tropical forests of Central and South America, the squirrel monkeys grow to 25 to 35 cm and possess a 35 to 42 cm tail. They bear a black and white face. Their life span is 15 years in the wild whereas 20 years in captivity.

Capuchins are found in Central America (Honduras) and middle South America (eastern Peru, middle Brazil, Paraguay). They are classified as genus Cebus. They give the look of friars. They are seen as pets on one hand, while at other, they are looked as troublesome when they despoil crops.

Spider Monkeys belong to Atelidae family. They are black in color and possess slender arms and legs like spiders. Specifically, they resemble woolly spider. One can spot them in tropical forests from southern Mexico to Brazil.

Owl Monkeys are also known as the Night monkeys. They are from the genus Aotus. These monkeys have very small ears, almost invisible to us. With these tiny ears, they can hear well at night. As name suggests these are nocturnal by nature. The forests of Central and South America, from Panama south to Paraguay and northern Argentina form their habitat.

Woolly Monkeys belong to the genus Lagothrix. They are found in the rainforests of South America.
